RP-3 Frequently Asked Questions
QUESTION: What is RP-3? ANSWER: RP-3 is a special enamel paint formulation that combines super tough Isophthalic resins with Zirconium non-moisture repellents, for the maximum one coat rustproofing protection available! QUESTION: Is RP-3 ready for use? ANSWER: Yes. Use as furnished. Do not add anything to RP-3. Simply stir and apply. QUESTION: What is the lowest outside temperature at which RP-3 may be applied? ANSWER: Surface temperature should be above 40° F. Air temperature should not be lower than the surface temperature. When application is made at these lower temperature ranges, the material in the container should be warned at room temperature - 70° - prior to application. This gives easier brushability. QUESTION: What surface preparation is necessary? ANSWER: Surface must be clean and dry. All loose rust should be removed by wire brushing or neutralize rust with RUST BUSTER. Previous coatings that are failing should be removed. RP-3 requires a solid, sound surface for maximum results. QUESTION: What is the high temperature range for application of RP-3? ANSWER: Up to 90° F. air temperature. Warmer temperatures result in difficulty in brushability due to too rapid a cure. QUESTION: How long does it take for RP-3 to dry? ANSWER: RP-3 dries dust free within 2 hours - hard dry overnight. QUESTION: Is more than one coat ever required? ANSWER: No - one coat does it on almost all surfaces. In rare cases where a second coat of RP-3 is applied, allow to dry 24 hours and then roughen the first coat prior to application of the second coat of RP-3. QUESTION: Is a primer ever required? ANSWER: Yes - when you have an extremely rough metal surface we recommend special RP-3 PRIMER to give a smooth base for RP-3. This gives you a maximum eye appeal for a rough surface. Allow RP-3 PRIMER to dry 12 hours before recoating with RP-3. QUESTION: What is the storage life of RP-3? ANSWER: One year or longer - store at normal temperature and dry atmosphere. QUESTION: Can RP-3 be sprayed? ANSWER: Yes - conventional air atomized spray equipment that is suitable for any high quality enamel may be used to spray RP-3. Airless spray equipment may also be used, adjusting fluid pressure to give the correct spray pattern in line with the equipment manufacturer's recommendation for enamel. QUESTION: What thinners for spray, if any? ANSWER: Conventional paint thinner. QUESTION: What solvent may be used for clean-up of tools and equipment? ANSWER: Conventional paint thinner. QUESTION: How long will RP-3 last? ANSWER: Durability of RP-3 finish coat before a recoat is required for outside exposure is estimated 5 years or more. Interior use even longer, depending upon interior conditions. QUESTION: Does RP-3 chalk? ANSWER: RP-3 is a non-chalking type coating and will not chalk. QUESTION: How long before the gloss begins to break down? ANSWER: This depends upon atmospheric conditions. The gloss lasts much longer on RP-3 than it would on other conventional rust-resisting paints. QUESTION: How does RP-3 perform when exposed to salt air at seacoast locations? ANSWER: Excellent. QUESTION: How does RP-3 perform under continuous direct sunlight exposure? ANSWER: Excellent - far superior to conventional coatings under these conditions.
